Body mass index, or BMI, compares body weight with height to produce a screening number. It is commonly used as a quick way to group adults into broad weight categories such as underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.
Choose metric units if you know your weight in kilograms and your height in meters, or imperial units for pounds and inches. The calculator converts the measurements into the BMI formula and also estimates the healthy weight range for the same height.
A BMI below 18.5 is considered underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is considered healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, and 30 or above is considered obesity. These cutoffs are standard reference points, not a diagnosis.
BMI does not directly measure body fat, muscle mass, age, sex, or athletic build, so it should be treated as a general screening tool. If you need medical guidance, use the result as a conversation starter with a qualified health professional rather than a final answer.
